What makes tourists from the East Coast of the United States decide to travel to Costa Rica? They don’t hesitate to prioritize three predominant qualities: the peace that is experienced in the nation, the wide range of adventures they can enjoy, and the kindness of the Costa Ricans.
This was determined by the most recent study on the tourism market in that region, presented by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) to the associates of Pro Imagen Costa Rica.
With this tool in hand, a large group of entrepreneurs from the Costa Rican tourism sector, who are affiliated with Pro Imagen, traveled through four cities of the U.S. East Coast to present trade shows.
Pro Imagen organized events in Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., where Costa Rican business professionals exhibited their offerings in defined shifts to local tourism agents.
According to Silvia Vargas, president of Pro Imagen, these meetings allow travel agents in each city to know first-hand the wide range of tourist products offered by Costa Rican companies.
Silvia Vargas also noted that the entrepreneurs who participated in the mission were empowered with the information that the ICT provided with the latest study of best prospects, which Pro Imagen revealed to them in the days leading up to the tour.
The visit to the four cities began on Oct. 15 in Boston and ended on Oct. 18 in Washington D.C. At each event there was a trade show, a general presentation about the Costa Rican tourist market, and a dinner that ended with a raffle among the local agents who attended.
Friendly and peaceful destination
Eight out of 10 American tourists highlight their desire to travel to Costa Rica because they consider it a “peaceful and serene” country. They also like that the country offers “unique experiences”, is “friendly and welcoming” for Americans, and offers the same conditions throughout the year.
The average age of tourists on the U.S. East Coast is between 23 and 53 years old, and more than 60% travel with their partner or family – making Costa Rica an ideal destination for romantic holidays and family tourism.
Interestingly, 56% of these travelers want to enjoy gastronomic experiences during their visit, which is an opportunity for the country to continue exploiting and differentiating gastronomy as a tourist product.
These figures are taken from the ICT, based on the study of Best Prospects for Costa Rica by Travel Styles, which was conducted through a survey of more than 2,000 Americans. The statistics also show that those who decide to travel to Costa Rica have at least planned to visit the beach, explore small towns and rural areas, see animals in their natural habitats, among others.
Additionally, among the main adventures they want to experience are swimming, climbing, whale watching, diving and canopy tours.
